Key Differences between iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone 8

Apple has finally launched the much-anticipated three new iPhone models called iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X. The iPhone X (pronounced as iPhone 10) is the 10th-anniversary model of the company, while the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are the successor of iPhone 7 and 7 Plus respectively. These three new handsets from Apple might share some internal and external features, but they also differ from each other in various aspects. There is a reason why Apple prices iPhone X at US$999 (S$1,648) for the base model while the other two models start at US$699 (S$1,148) and US$799 (S$1,308). It is not just the bezel-less OLED display of iPhone X for which the company is charging a premium price. There are some magical new features exclusive to the iPhone X that are not available on other two models. So, let’s see how better the iPhone X is when compared to iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

Differences Between iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone 8

Here is the list of differences between these three new iPhone models. Other than these, almost all the features are common across the three iPhone models.

Design Differences

Front: The iPhone X pretty much differs from the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in terms of design. While all these iPhone models are made up of glass, the iPhone X features a full-screen OLED display on the front side without the iconic Home button.

Home Button: iPhone X does not have Touch ID Home button. The front of iPhone 8 and iPhone Plus is exactly similar to the previous iPhone 7 lineup. These two models still have the Touch ID Home button.

Dimensions & Weight: Despite having a larger display, Edge-to-edge display of iPhone X makes it smaller than the iPhone 8 Plus. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have the sizes identical to older siblings.

Display Differences

iPhone 8 has a 4.7-inch LCD display with 750p resolution and 326 ppi density.
iPhone 8 Plus features a 5.5-inch display with 1080p resolution and 401ppi density.
iPhone X has an edge-to-edge 5.8-inch OLED display with 1125 x 2436 resolution and 458 ppi density.

The display on the iPhone X has rounded corners, while on the other two models, the display corners are squarish.

The OLED display of iPhone X supports HDR10 standard and Dolby Vision. The other two models do not have such features.

Hardware Differences

Chipset: All three new iPhone models are powered by Apple A11 Bionic Chipset. It contains a 6-cores processor, a dual-core Neural engine, and M11 motion coprocessor.

RAM: Both the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus have 3GB RAM while the iPhone 8 comes with 2GB RAM module.

Storage capacity: All three iPhone models are available in two storage options; 64GB and 256GB.

Biometric Verification: iPhone X has Face ID for facial recognition but no Touch ID fingerprint scanner. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus does not have Face ID but still retains the Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

Camera Differences

Sensor: The iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus features a dual 12MP camera setup on the rear side. While the iPhone 8 has a single 12MP shooter on the back.

Aperture: The telephoto lens on iPhone X features a f/2.4 aperture with OIS. But the same lens on iPhone 8 Plus has a f/2.8 aperture without OIS.

Alignment: The main dual camera of the iPhone X is vertically aligned as opposed to the iPhone 8 Plus’ horizontally aligned camera.

Front-facing Camera: On the front side, iPhone X has a 7MP True Depth camera, while the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus continues to have a FaceTime HD camera just like their predecessors. The front camera of iPhone X is capable of Portrait mode and Portrait Lighting for selfies. The same is not possible on other two iPhones.

Battery

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus offers the same battery life as their predecessors. The iPhone X offers two hours of additional battery life compared to iPhone 8.

Price & Availability

iPhone 8 is the cheapest 2017 iPhone model with a price tag of US$699 (S$1,148).
iPhone 8 Plus comes as a second cheaper option with US$799 (S$1,308) price tag.
iPhone X is the premium option and costs US$999 (S$1,648) for 64GB and US$1,149 (S$1,888) for 256GB capacity option.

The iPhone X pre-order will start on October 27

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are all set to hit the shelves of retail stores on September 22.
